A little history
This elegant 1930s Art Deco house in Penarth was in poor condition and needed complete renovation in order to bring it up to modern standards.
The original house was designed in 1934 by the London architect R A C Churchward for The Coalelectric Estate Development Co. Ltd.
Around the 1980s it was extended with a large single storey which wasn’t sympathetic to the original house.
The clients loved the original design of the house and wanted to maintain it.
The initial plan was to demolish the 1980s extension and renovate the existing house but after coming up against a lot of problems, it was determined that the most viable solution was to demolish the original house and rebuild it with subtle differences to the design and using modern building practices.
The plot is located alongside the Cliff Walk with views across the Channel. We are proud to collaborate with Downs Merrifield architects on such a rare project which respects the history and design of a landmark piece of architecture.
